Red Cherry Shrimp (neocaridina heteropoda) are wildly popular shrimp for the home freshwater aquarium, many people expect to soon be breeding red cherry shrimp.  You may know that I’ve written about them some here already and have plans to sell them via my freshwater shrimp site.  I had thought for about 5 months that I would soon have enough shrimp to feel comfortable selling some, but I haven’t seen the population grow quite as exponentially as I expected.  So, I’ve been reading about red cherry shrimp breeding and wanted to put together a post with quite a few details.

So, our first experiment with red cherry shrimp in a large (gallon?) mason jar went really pretty well.  They survive

d there for several months until we hit a real hot spell.  The jar was on the window sill and unfortun

ately got morning sun.  Good thing in cool weather, bad thing in hot weather.  I’m sure the temperature was what caused their demise.  Yes, they died.  we had some plants in there as well.  Then we proceeded with our next try, unfortunately those died within a few weeks.  This pretty much confirmed for us that the problem had to do with the temperature.

I’ve been captivated with the red cherry shrimp. They’re unique, have interesting personalities and seem really resilient. I have a tank that is exclusively red cherry shrimp now and for quite a while I’ve been wondering about what other containers I might use. We recently found some huge mason jars (1/2 gallon – not the quart jars.) I thought for quite a while before trying it, but decided to put a few red cherry shrimp in one. I’ve added some plants, a bit of guppy grass, duckweed, anacharis maybe a bit of java moss. But there are three shrimp in there. They’ve been there and on the window sill now for about 4 weeks (maybe 5 now.) No filter, no heater (it is summer after all and is running 70-80 in the house during the day if not higher…)

I’m still a bit stunned. I came back inside from looking in on our outside fish and noticed two dark objects bouncing around in the flow of the uplift tube from the undergravel filter in our 5 gallon tank. Now….. from time to time, gunk has accumulated in the tube and will come if in sheets that can be about the size of a small leaf. But I kept looking at these…. they didn’t seem to be appearing smaller and then larger as usual. (When you see the sheet of gunk from the side it appears much smaller….) After about thirty seconds I realized that there were two inch long cherry shrimp in there. (Both female.) Now, I had worried about cherry shrimp in our other filter being drawn in through the intake tube, but never imagined one (much less two) would be stuck in the uplift tube.

I carefully pulled the tube loose and they both seem alive (!) I don’t know how (or when they managed to get in. I suppose they could have climbed in at the top the last time the power was out and the tube was quiet. I’m amazed they’re still alive.

I’ve really got hooked on dwarf freshwater shrimp. We have red cherry shrimp in two tanks right now and I’m thinking about the possibilities of a third tank (for yellow shrimp maybe…) I’m also seriously considering a species only tank (or two….)

Why?

They’re surprisingly entertaining to watch. The other day I saw a male shrimp catch a ride on the side of our red mickey mouse platy for about 2-3 seconds…. it was such a funny sight and by the time the platy started to try to dislodge his hitchhiker, the shrimp let go and cruised along on his own.

I’m seriously thinking about the sheer numbers of how many shrimp will be in my shrimpire …. shrempire? and realistically thinking I’ll have to consider some way to get them out of here in a few months.

Selling Red Cherry Shrimp?

Well… I don’t have enough shrimp yet to think about selling any but…. the thought has crossed my mind that in a few months I may have enough to sell. In fact, I’m so jazzed about the dwarf shrimp I’m thinking about a shrimp species tank (right now I’m leaning towards yellow shrimp there…. ) Although I don’t have any yellow shrimp (yet?).

They seem such fun critters…. it’s so neat to see the males surfing around the tank and they’re a great cleanup crew. I don’t know how many times I asked for them at our LFS and they told me they sell out fast when they get them. I bought mine on ebay and took notes as to how things were packaged. To my knowledge I didn’t have one shrimp die in the shipping/establishing phase. (Although there may have been a couple snacked upon….)

So, long story short…. I may be opening a separate web page that would be devoted to selling the dwarf shrimp. Mostly the neocaridina shrimp such as the yellow, red cherry and blue pearl. But… I’ve been looking at the crystal red shrimp as well…. who knows maybe a year or two down the road? I’ll announce here if and when I setup a standalone site for the shrimp. I expect first that I would probably do a couple of test sales to get my sea legs with shipping them.

Well, it was March 4th when we added the first batch of red cherry shrimp to the 10 gallon planted tank. We have tons of plants in there and it’s really hard to see more than 5 shrimp at a time. (We have about 30 or so I think….) Anyway, early on I thought I saw one of the female shrimp looked to be berried. Unfortunately I haven’t seen her in weeks. Well…. today I was getting ready for a water change and started to push down a water sprite I had anchored into the substrate yesterday, but floated loose overnight. Between my hand and the glass I saw a little bit of red floating… I thought it was debris. About a quarter inch long. I moved my finger towards it and it jumped the way the shrimp do. We have some baby shrimp! Woohoo…. I have no idea how long it will be before I see it (or another) again though….

So, I finally got some red cherry shrimp. I’ve been wanting to try some for a month or two now. I kept missing them at the local fish store and finally broke down and ordered 20 via ebay.com. I was really a bit skeptical of mail order shrimp but after all, many of them wind up being mail order to the local fish store anyway. I was a bit concerned that 20 would be too many. I thought I’d split and put about 7 in our 5 gallon and 13 in our 10 gallon tank. The shrimp that I ordered were mostly juvenile. There was a range of ages for the shrimp.
