I’ve really got hooked on dwarf freshwater shrimp. We have red cherry shrimp in two tanks right now and I’m thinking about the possibilities of a third tank (for yellow shrimp maybe…) I’m also seriously considering a species only tank (or two….)

Why?

They’re surprisingly entertaining to watch. The other day I saw a male shrimp catch a ride on the side of our red mickey mouse platy for about 2-3 seconds…. it was such a funny sight and by the time the platy started to try to dislodge his hitchhiker, the shrimp let go and cruised along on his own.

I’m seriously thinking about the sheer numbers of how many shrimp will be in my shrimpire …. shrempire? and realistically thinking I’ll have to consider some way to get them out of here in a few months.

When I first got the shrimp the main goal was to clean the tank of algae and of dead plant matter. I thought the baby shrimp would probably be a good additional food source for the fish. Maybe even a good starting food for the baby fry of the platies…. (Since baby brine shrimp is a recommended fry food – why not baby red cherry shrimp?)

So in a couple months I may have some red cherry shrimp to sell. However… the 5 gallon tank will be replaced sometime this summer. It has a leak when filled to a point where the water covers the under gravel filter lift tube. It will either be a 10/15 or 20 gallon tank replacing it. So, we’ll have a bit more capacity for our shrimp, but still…. when we get over a hundred in each tank….

So, I’ve been looking at how to ship them and think I’m all set for a test shipment. Not sure exactly when I’ll do that, probably it’s still a few months away.

I will definitely post here to let you know (and if I do wind up branching out to selling them on a regular basis they will get their own website.) I’ll make sure that it’s good and visible here if and when they do have a standalone site.
