Well, it was March 4th when we added the first batch of red cherry shrimp to the 10 gallon planted tank. We have tons of plants in there and it’s really hard to see more than 5 shrimp at a time. (We have about 30 or so I think….) Anyway, early on I thought I saw one of the female shrimp looked to be berried. Unfortunately I haven’t seen her in weeks. Well…. today I was getting ready for a water change and started to push down a water sprite I had anchored into the substrate yesterday, but floated loose overnight. Between my hand and the glass I saw a little bit of red floating… I thought it was debris. About a quarter inch long. I moved my finger towards it and it jumped the way the shrimp do. We have some baby shrimp! Woohoo…. I have no idea how long it will be before I see it (or another) again though….

Update – 4-2-11

YES – definitely have baby red cherry shrimp in the 10 gallon tank. I was looking in with a flashlight after lights out and caught a glimpse of one moving from the front of some java mass into the interior. I had also seen one slightly larger just a few minutes previously. I think that larger one is still small enough it could have been born in the tank. I also saw another tiny one perched on the java moss and not one but two more in the corner around some water sprite.

So, that’s 5 baby red cherry shrimp – possibly from at least 2 different batches (maybe 3!)

I think we’re close to being able to say that we’ve got a good established breeding colony!!!!

In the five gallon tank I have seen some monster female red cherry shrimp, but not yet have I seen any babies. It could be that the growing platy 5 are keeping them gobbled up. As the weather warms and the platy 5 grow…. they will be moving to a container outside and the baby shrimp may have more of a chance.

==update 4-9-11

Well in the last week I’ve seen not one but two berried shrimp int he 5 gallon tank. So, we’ve got more baby red cherry shrimp on the way. One of them it only looked like a couple eggs left and it appeared as though they may have been in the process of hatching. I watched for about 15 minutes but didn’t see the last couple hatch.

–update 5-8-11

That is so cool! I’ve seen a couple of baby shrimp the last two nights in the small 5 gallon tank. They are maybe 1/4 inch long. WOW! These are the first babies that I’ve seen out and about in this tank. I’ve previously seen some juvenile shrimp that I suspected were native to the tank.
