Well…. I’ve already updated this on the platy fry post, but…. in looking at our oldest tank of fry. They’re now almost 2 months old. (Born 2-19-11) They’re still quite small fish and all look female at this point. There is an adult male in with them and today I noticed that they must be looking good to him because he’s starting to behave a little different around them, sidling up next to them much the way I saw Mickey court a couple fish….

So, as I’m reading it looks as though most people say that platies reach sexual maturity at around 3-4 months. I’ve seen one account suggesting as young as 2 months. I’m not sure how precise these counts are. We may get to pin down an exact threshold though because I’ve seen 23-25 day gestation periods with the mother platy at this point. What to do….

I’ve really got hooked on dwarf freshwater shrimp. We have red cherry shrimp in two tanks right now and I’m thinking about the possibilities of a third tank (for yellow shrimp maybe…) I’m also seriously considering a species only tank (or two….)

Why?

They’re surprisingly entertaining to watch. The other day I saw a male shrimp catch a ride on the side of our red mickey mouse platy for about 2-3 seconds…. it was such a funny sight and by the time the platy started to try to dislodge his hitchhiker, the shrimp let go and cruised along on his own.

I’m seriously thinking about the sheer numbers of how many shrimp will be in my shrimpire …. shrempire? and realistically thinking I’ll have to consider some way to get them out of here in a few months.

Selling Red Cherry Shrimp?

Well… I don’t have enough shrimp yet to think about selling any but…. the thought has crossed my mind that in a few months I may have enough to sell. In fact, I’m so jazzed about the dwarf shrimp I’m thinking about a shrimp species tank (right now I’m leaning towards yellow shrimp there…. ) Although I don’t have any yellow shrimp (yet?).

They seem such fun critters…. it’s so neat to see the males surfing around the tank and they’re a great cleanup crew. I don’t know how many times I asked for them at our LFS and they told me they sell out fast when they get them. I bought mine on ebay and took notes as to how things were packaged. To my knowledge I didn’t have one shrimp die in the shipping/establishing phase. (Although there may have been a couple snacked upon….)

So, long story short…. I may be opening a separate web page that would be devoted to selling the dwarf shrimp. Mostly the neocaridina shrimp such as the yellow, red cherry and blue pearl. But… I’ve been looking at the crystal red shrimp as well…. who knows maybe a year or two down the road? I’ll announce here if and when I setup a standalone site for the shrimp. I expect first that I would probably do a couple of test sales to get my sea legs with shipping them.

I feel terrible…. I feel like an idiot….

So, in my struggle to get this mini-cycle under control in the ten gallon tank I’ve tried a lot of things. Including pulling out the (now browning) water sprite. I thought the dead leaves which were very hard to separate from the big mass of water sprite may be putting more ammonia in than the plant is currently able to suck out. So, I had those out and in a bucket and was going to set them outside, but I got to thinking that I may have pulled some shrimp with them. So, I used a plastic bottle and made a trap. Similar to one you can find if you google or do a youtube search on home made shrimp traps or fish traps. You cut off the top, take off the lid, invert the top half inside the bottom half, put in some food and place it. Well, there were apparently no shrimp in the trap from the bucket and so I had this bright idea that I might use it in the 10 gallon to help get some of the shrimp out in order to move them to the other (stable) tank until the ammonia issue is over.

So…. with the 10 gallon Walstad planted tank I’ve broken down and invested a meager $40 in the Finnex PX-360 compact canister filter. I had researched it and all seemed to say that this was as good a cheap filter as is available. First off, I should walk through why I decided to get a real filter for a Walstad tank. Well, when I first setup the planted tank I had read that you could run it without a filter. I felt uncomfortable just going completely natural and made a pvc pipe sponge filter with seed media from our other tank. Planted, checked ammonia – observed a short cycle and then added fish. Well, as I added fish there was a minicycle – so in went more plants and then things had stabilized, we had baby fish in the other tank and their mother was moved into the Walstad. At that point we started running trace ammonia frequently. So, I made a second pvc sponge filter to put in. Over the stretch of time from the beginning of the tank up until now the ph level had gradually changed from around 6.0 (lowest readable with the test kit) up to the now 7.0 or 7.2.
